1. Kensington Metropark Livingston County · Milford/Brighton

If I had to pick one location for senior portraits in this part of Michigan, Kensington would be it. This park straddles the Livingston-Oakland county line and has everything — wooded trails, open fields, a lake with gorgeous reflections, rustic bridges, and fall color that will make your jaw drop from late September through mid-October.

The park is massive, so I usually start at the Martindale Beach area for waterfront shots during golden hour, then move to the nature trails near the Nature Center for that moody, wooded look. The Farm Center area is another hidden gem with old fencing and barn textures that add character without overwhelming the frame.

Rebecca's tip: Come during the week if possible. Weekend evenings in fall get crowded at the popular spots. A Metropark vehicle pass ($40/year) covers unlimited visits, and most of my senior clients end up using it for family sessions later too.

2. Island Lake Recreation Area Livingston County · Brighton/Howell

Island Lake sits right between Brighton and Howell along I-96 and offers some of the most diverse scenery in one spot. Tall prairie grasses in summer, fiery maples in fall, and snow-dusted pines in winter. The spring-fed creek that runs through the park creates beautiful leading lines in photos.

I love the stretch along the Huron River where you get water reflections and overhanging trees. The boardwalk sections are great for a more polished, clean look, while the wilder trails give you that effortless, editorial vibe. This is where I shot some of my most-saved Instagram photos.

Rebecca's tip: Wear boots or shoes you don't mind getting a little dirty — the trails near the river can be muddy after rain, but that's also when the light is the most magical.

3. Downtown Brighton Livingston County

Not every senior wants a nature setting. Downtown Brighton offers colorful storefronts, brick alleys, murals, and that small-town charm that photographs beautifully. Main Street has great variety within a few walkable blocks — you can go from a moody brick wall to a colorful doorway to a tree-lined sidewalk in minutes.

The area near the Mill Pond and the walking bridge gives you a mix of urban and natural in one frame. I also love the side streets with older Victorian homes — the porches and architecture add texture without needing to go far.

Rebecca's tip: Schedule downtown sessions for early morning or within an hour of sunset. Midday sun creates harsh shadows between buildings, but evening light turns those same alleys into something gorgeous.

4. Brighton Mill Pond Livingston County

This is right in the heart of Brighton and most people drive past it without realizing how photogenic it is. The pond gives you water reflections, and the surrounding area has park benches, walking paths, and mature trees. It's compact, which makes it great for shorter mini sessions or as a second stop during a full session downtown.

Morning light here is especially beautiful — the pond is calm, the reflections are crisp, and the area is almost always empty before 9 AM.

5. Historic Downtown Howell Livingston County

The Howell courthouse, the historic theater marquee, the brick buildings along Grand River — downtown Howell has a character that's hard to replicate. It's especially beautiful during the holidays when the storefronts are decorated, but it works year-round for seniors who want that Main Street America feel.

The residential streets just off downtown have some incredible Victorian and Craftsman homes with porches, columns, and gardens that make gorgeous backdrops. And the mural on the side of the building near the farmers market is always a hit.

Rebecca's tip: If your session falls during Howell Melon Festival, Fantasy of Lights, or a Friday night concert, we can incorporate the event into the shoot for something truly unique.

6. Huron Meadows Metropark Livingston County · Brighton

This one flies under the radar compared to Kensington, but that's exactly why I love it. Huron Meadows has rolling hills, wildflower meadows in summer, and a quiet, uncrowded feel year-round. The cross-country ski trails double as gorgeous walking paths surrounded by tall grass and scattered trees.

If you want that wide-open, dreamy, "standing in a field at golden hour" look, this is the place. The lack of crowds means we can take our time without worrying about people walking through shots.

7. Lakelands Trail State Park Livingston County · Pinckney/Hamburg

This 13-mile crushed limestone trail runs from Stockbridge to Pinckney and passes through some of the prettiest countryside in Livingston County. Old railroad bridges, wildflower fields, and tree-canopied stretches make it incredibly versatile for portraits.

I usually access it from the Hamburg Township trailhead, which gives easy access to a photogenic bridge over the Huron River. The trail is wide and flat, so it's easy to walk in nicer shoes if you want to dress up.

8. Downtown Milford Oakland County

Milford is Brighton's artsy cousin. The downtown has a more eclectic, creative feel with independent shops, galleries, and beautifully maintained historic buildings. The Huron River runs right through town, and the pedestrian bridge over the river is one of my favorite spots in all of Oakland County.

Central Park in Milford has open green space, mature trees, and a gazebo — perfect for a classic, timeless look. If your senior has a vintage or artsy personal style, Milford is the first place I recommend.

Rebecca's tip: Milford is only about 20 minutes from Brighton. The drive is absolutely worth it for the variety it adds, especially for split sessions where we shoot two different looks on two different dates.

9. Proud Lake Recreation Area Oakland County · Wixom/Commerce

Located between Milford and Wixom, Proud Lake offers a more rugged, untouched feel. The river sections are beautiful, and the park has meadows, marshlands, and dense forests. It's a great choice if your senior is outdoorsy or wants photos that feel more adventurous and less "posed in a park."

The variety here is impressive — you can go from a riverbank to an open field to deep woods within a short walk. A Michigan Recreation Passport ($17 on your plate renewal) gets you in.

10. Maybury State Park Oakland County · Northville

Maybury is a Northville gem with paved and unpaved trails, open meadows, dense forests, and a working farm. It's typically less crowded than Kensington, which means more privacy and flexibility during your session.

The tree-lined trail near the main entrance is stunning in every season. In fall, the canopy creates a tunnel of color overhead. In winter, the bare branches against a grey sky give you a completely different, more dramatic mood.

Rebecca's tip: A Michigan Recreation Passport covers all state parks including Maybury, Island Lake, and Proud Lake. One purchase on your plate renewal covers you for the whole year.

11. Downtown Northville Oakland County

Northville's downtown is one of the most charming in all of Metro Detroit. The historic clock tower, the old mill, the stone buildings along Main Street — it all has a storybook quality that photographs incredibly well. The shops and restaurants create colorful, textured backdrops without being too busy.

Mill Race Village, just a short walk from downtown, is a preserved historical village with log cabins, a church, and a schoolhouse. It feels like stepping back in time and gives you a completely unique look that no other location can offer.

12. Stony Creek Metropark Oakland County · Rochester/Shelby Twp

If your senior is in the northern Oakland County area, Stony Creek is an excellent choice. The park has a large lake, wooded trails, and rocky creek beds that add interesting texture to photos. The elevation changes create natural variety — you can shoot at water level, on a hillside, or in a pine forest all within the same session.

Fall is spectacular here with the lake reflecting the changing trees. The park is big enough that even on busy weekends you can find a quiet stretch to yourselves.

13. Cranbrook Area — Bloomfield Hills Oakland County

The grounds around the Cranbrook campus in Bloomfield Hills have a European, almost castle-like feel. Stone walls, iron gates, manicured gardens, and dramatic architecture make this one of the most unique senior photo locations in all of Southeast Michigan. If your senior wants something elegant and sophisticated, this is the spot.

The surrounding neighborhood also has gorgeous tree-lined streets and stone bridges. It's a different vibe entirely from the parks and downtowns — more editorial, more polished.

Rebecca's tip: Some areas of the Cranbrook campus are private, but the public grounds and surrounding streets are fair game and just as beautiful. I know exactly where to go to get the best shots without any access issues.

14. Your Own Backyard Anywhere in Michigan

I'm not kidding. Some of my favorite sessions ever have been in backyards, living rooms, driveways, and front porches. If your home has a big tree, a textured fence, a garden, or even just a clean wall with good light, we can make magic there.

Home sessions have a comfort level that you just can't get anywhere else. Your senior is relaxed, your pets can make a cameo, and the photos feel genuinely personal. It's not about the backdrop — it's about the light and the connection.

Rebecca's tip: Send me a few photos of your yard or porch and I'll tell you within minutes if the light works. More often than not, it absolutely does.

15. Insider Tips for Any Location

Timing is everything

The single biggest factor in great outdoor photos isn't the location — it's the time of day. I shoot during "golden hour," which is roughly the last 90 minutes before sunset. The light is warm, soft, and directional, which is flattering on everyone. Avoid midday sun at all costs.

Season matters

Michigan gives us four completely different looks throughout the year. Late September through mid-October is the most popular for fall color. June and July give you lush green and wildflowers. Even January and February can be stunning with snow on the ground — just dress warm and we'll make it quick.

Outfit coordination

I send every client a detailed style guide after booking, but the short version: avoid large logos and busy patterns, bring layers you can add or remove, and coordinate with the location. Earth tones and jewel tones photograph beautifully against Michigan's natural backdrop.

Livingston vs. Oakland County — how to choose

Livingston County locations tend to have a more rural, natural feel — think open meadows, farmland, and small-town downtowns. Oakland County offers a wider range from rugged parks to upscale downtowns to estate-like settings. I'm happy to travel to any of these locations, so choose based on the vibe your senior wants, not just proximity.

Book early

Fall senior session slots fill up fast — especially weekends. If you already know you want fall color, reach out 3–6 months ahead to lock in your date. Mini session specials sell out within days of being announced.
